My mother, Marjorie, blessed me with her musical talent.

“Reaching Out” is a deep song that can tear at your heartstrings. Even though my mom wrote this song years ago, it relates to the times we live in today.

I can’t recall when she wrote the song, but I remember her singing it

It was beautiful — my mom had a natural way of helping other people. She cared deeply. Even though she didn’t ask for much, she always had time to give to others. Her song is just about that. “Let us love one another; let us reach out to our brother “ was part of her lyrics. She says, “Let’s not forget how to live; let’s not forget how to love.”

With the release of her song, I added a few changes. I hope that she would approve. At the beginning of the song, I’m playing my singing bowl, which is tuned to the heart chakra. Then it flows into my version: “Let us love one another, let us reach out to each other; in your hour of loneliness, let us lend a helping hand.”

I think it is the perfect time to share it with the world.

My mom passed away in September 2013, and before she died, I asked her to share all the lyrics to her song. She did write them out for me but didn’t have a title for the song. While her words were all about reaching out to those who may need help, a hand, or a smile, I felt the title “Reaching Out” made perfect sense.

Growing up, I can’t remember a time when someone wasn’t playing guitar and singing at my house.

I come from a strong, musically talented family. Both my Mom and Dad played guitar and sang. I have two aunts on both sides of the family who play and sing. Aunt Margaret, my Dad’s sister, passed away briefly before my Dad. She had the talent to strum the guitar with the best fiddlers and mandolin players. She could keep up! My aunt Winnie, my mother’s sister, can play the guitar, piano, organ, mandolin and base! She has a beautiful voice, and I love harmonizing with her.

As a kid, my mom would be cleaning, stopping to take a singing break. She loved singing spiritual songs but loved country, too. She’d close her eyes, and you could tell that the music would take her away. She was probably dreaming of escaping to a secluded island to escape from us six kids, HA!

I hope this song reminds you to help and pay it forward when you can.

When we lead from our hearts, we can all make beautiful changes for humanity and the world. Join me as I publish this song, honouring my mother’s legacy by sharing her inspiration with as many people as possible.
